Our Approach

It’s time for a new, patient-centered approach. To understand brain inflammation and mental health, researchers need three things: statistics, samples, and stories.

Quantitative data leads to scale and prevalence, but doesn’t map the connections between different conditions and symptoms.

Testing blood and other bio-samples helps describe the biological landscape, but doesn’t capture the reality of a patient’s daily life.

Patient experiences seem to be the missing piece of the puzzle. By combining all three, researchers can begin to see the patterns which have eluded us for so long.

The Brain Inflammation Collaborative works to inspire these connections that are necessary to making strides in understanding how mental health symptoms impact our overall community.

Bringing together patients, clinicians, and researchers to learn from one another’s experiences is essential.

What We Do

We are uncovering the connection between brain inflammation and mental health through collaboration, coordination, and communication.

We want to simplify how researchers and clinicians work to find the answers patients deserve. With free access to large-scale, quality patient data, we support collaborative research, accelerating advancements in diagnosis and treatment of brain inflammation.

We provide patients with a place to tell researchers their stories and to share their real-world experiences in a way that can be easily analyzed. We work with researchers on longitudinal studies that investigate the natural history of neuroinflammatory syndromes. We search for underlying causes of mental health symptoms that can often present in people affected by autoimmune diseases.

Patients and caregivers can now actively participate in research, as both participants and leaders. They can harness their own own data for disease management and for discussions with their doctor.

By breaking down barriers to conducting research and participating in it, we work to drive progress in clinical standards of care and achieve a tangible, timely impact in patients' lives.

Our research priorities are fueled by this critical research gap.

The Brain Inflammation Collaborative (BIC) runs unhide®, a digital health tool designed to uncover hidden connections between inflammation, chronic illness, and overall health. unhide® is an exciting resource for patients and researchers alike. The easy-to-use, secure platform allows patients to contribute data through symptom surveys, validated assessments, wearable devices, and health history to support research across 30+ related conditions.
